What began with $500 and a juicer has turned into a storefront in Midtown Village. Jennifer Richmond and Joel Odhner quietly opened Jar Bar (113 S. 12th St.) early this week without so much as a street sign out front to let people know. (Meal Ticket first mentioned it in June.)

Richmond and Odhner are the creators of Catalyst Cleanse, a line of fresh-squeezed rejuvenating juices distributed locally via designated pickup locations. Today, their beverages are shipped to customers all over the United States. "Folks [are] ordering from California," says Jar Bar staffer/right-hand man Calvin. "You're telling me with all those eggheads in California, you can't find some good juices out there? Nope. People are paying $180 just to ship [Catalyst Cleanse] juices that already cost $180. People tell us we've got the best juice in the U.S."

Dr. Oz and Oprah agree. Odhner was Oz's raw-food consultant before leaving to start the business with Richmond, and his juice was featured on Ms. Winfrey's show. Variations on Catalyst products appear on Jar Bar's menu, but it's more than just a juice joint. "I wanted this to be a place where people aren't just making a meal out of juice," says Richmond. "I want people to round out that juice with added herbal extracts and wheatgrass, as well as a salad or a burger." (Here's their opening menu.)

Richmond and Odhner were kind enough to let us try a few items off their all-raw menu. Since I'm unfamiliar with the textures and flavors of raw food, some of the dishes were odd to me (the "burger," made with almonds, flax, carrots and celery, was a little too raw for my tastes), but I wanted seconds on the jicama fries. The Asian kale salad, meanwhile, was the best kale dish I've tasted, raw or cooked, and the hemp-milk smoothie with almond butter, raw cacao, and vanilla vegan protein powder was a winner, too.

Jar Bar is open Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
