We're starting to think we might have a bit of a pie problem.

Magpie's holiday specials look awfully good

POSTED: Friday, December 14, 2012, 12:11 PM

Oh, goddammit. Is it just us, or does Holly Ricciardi at Magpie (1622 South St.) have an uncanny sixth sense for what people want to binge on? Because her menu additions—like this month's peppermint bark pie, seen above—are starting to feel almost manipulative: a brownie pie? Laden with ganache and crushed candy canes? It would be better, for us, if we didn't have the option of just walking into a store with $30 in our pocket and buying an entire pie's worth of that.

So we have to recommend that you visit with friends whose presence will shame you into only buying a slice ($5), or order one for a holiday gathering with enough guests in attendance that everyone insists on slivering every sweet in sight.

Of course, if you go on the right weekend (follow the bakery on Twitter if you're the type who doesn't have to eat pie just because you see someone tweet about pie), you might also luck upon a mini version. Through December, they're featuring a rotating cast of seasonal miniature pies ($3.50) on weekends, including flavors like casserole-inspired sweet potato with toasted vanilla meringue or eggnog cream with crushed gingersnaps. Fans of persimmon, look out for the persimmon custard mini with candied pistachios. Just don't look for us, because we're trying our best to hold off on the all-out gluttony for another week or so.
