Manakeesh Cafe's plans for Ramadan

Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, and Muslims worldwide have already begun their month of prayer, study, charity and daytime fasting. West Philly's Manakeesh Café (4420 Walnut St.), which earned a nice nod from our Adam Erace back in March, is typically open all day, but they'll stay closed until sundown for the duration of August in observance of the holy month. Once they reopen at 8 p.m. every night, though? Then it's time to eat.

To accommodate what will surely be a large crush of famished observers, Manakeesh will stay open until the early-morning hours each night of Ramadan. And there will be some special stuff to order: Chef Wissam Zayat has prepared a menu highlighting a different specialty dish for each night of the holiday — 15 total, with the rotation starting over once the holy month hits its half-way point. Eats will include dishes like chicken over rice; frike (smoked wheat) with meat; stuffed lamb; and mughrabiyyeh (basically a larger-grained Lebanese-style couscous). The Ramadan meals will run $16.75 per person, a price that includes dates, salad, apps and bread (just $8 for kids under 12).

"It is expected to be really crowded, and we will be giving priority seating to those who reserve," says Manakeesh GM Abd Ghazzawi. They'll take reservations via phone (215-921-2135) or web.
