MangoMoon to close; new Japanese concept on the way

Chef Moon Krapugthong plans on closing her Bangkok street food spot MangoMoon (4161 Main St.) on April 9 to focus on her long-running Chabaa Thai (4371 Main St.) as well as a brand-new operation: Yanako, a Japanese restaurant that'll allow her to further develop her professional collaboration with Okinawan chef Harry Ige, whom she hosted for a "Chef in Residence" stint earlier this year.

Located at 4410 Main, across the street from Derek's, Yanako (a shortened version of the Japanese word for butterfly flower) will have an atypical focus as far as Stateside Japanese restaurants go. Ige will step out of this bento box/yakitori mold at the 60-seat BYOB, which will open in the fall. "[Diners] are sophisticated enough to have uni on the shell, mountain potato, fermented squid on beans ... those kinds of things, customers are ready for it," say Krapugthong. Ige's ultra-clean approach to sushi will also be highlighted on the line here — don't expect any fancy, overcomplicated rolls with 60 ingredients. Traditionally sushi chefs are all men, but Krapugthong, ever the ardent supporter of women in the typically male-dominated restaurant business, says she's on the lookout for one or several female chefs to cook alongside Ige at Yanako.

Though MangoMoon is coming to an end, Krapugthong is juggling plenty of other projects in addition to this one — Chabaa Thai is in the midst of an expansion, and she's also deep into preparations for an April 4 appearance at the James Beard House.

I never did find my way to Mango Moon, but I've been going to Chabbaa since it opened. I'm moving back to Manayunk, so this is all very fun news.
