Meal Ticket's Guide to Cinco de Mayo in Philly

Need Cinco de Mayo plans, Mexiphiles excessive drinking fans? Glad you're here. Hit up the jump for our Cinco de Mayo picks, toast to those brave Mexicanos who whupped the huitlacoche out of the French at the Battle of Puebla, take two of these and call us Friday morning. Or afternoon, whenever you're feeling better.
Avenida (7402 Germantown Ave.): Mount Airy's Avenida is opting for a number-themed route this holiday: All margaritas and sangria will cost (you guessed it) just $5. There are also a bevvy of $5 food specials, including quesadillas, calamari and a coconut tres leches cake. Avenida's also extremely kid-friendly, so you can bring your tykes along for dinner instead of getting a sitter.
Baja Fresh (various locations): From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the day itself (and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Seis de Mayo), they'll be hosting free giveaways every 15 minutes. Prizes include such wonders as gift certificates, maracas, Cholula, T-shirts and sombreros.
Cantina Feliz (428 S. Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington) Feliz is ringing in the holiday with margaritas and a whole roasted pig. They'll pour sangria, Mexican beers and more than 50 types of tequila. The regular menu will also be available, but this is too good of a chance to take advantage of Tim Spinner's pork without pre-ordering it in a big group. It's served with refried beans, taco shells, salsa and corn esquites.
Cantina Los Caballitos (1651 E. Passyunk Ave.) & Cantina Dos Segundos (931 N. Second St.): In addition to their regularly festive menus, both Cantinas are offering some major drink dealage — watermelon margaritas, white sangrias, Modelo tallboys and an assortment of edible treats will all be priced at the eminently appropriate price of $5.55. Costumes encouraged.
Distrito (3945 Chestnut St.): It's an all-out bilevel fiesta at Jose Garces' West Philly Mexi-stablishment. From 3 p.m. to midnight, the first floor will be playing host to $5 margaritas and $5-to-$7 esquitos, guacamole, nachos and tacos. Plus, DJ Lips will be spinning from 8 to 12. The high rollers on the second floor can treat themselves to a VIP tequila tasting for $35 in advance or $45 at the door. Ring 215-222-1657 to snag a spot.
Flying Carpet Café (19th and Poplar): Starting at 5 p.m., $5 will get you a shot of Cuervo and a Corona, or a glass of Spanish wine
Jolly's Dueling Piano Bar (1420 Locust St.): If you haven't been to Jolly's new location, what better day to test it out than Cinco de Mayo? They'll be serving up beer buckets, $4 margaritas and $3 Landshark Lagers — and there's no cover. Also, starting at 8 p.m., it's Jimmy Buffett night. Might as well take a trip to Margaritaville, right?
Matyson (37 S. 19th St.): Mexican tasting menu is the name of the game at this Center City BYO. Courses include ahi tuna ceviche, rock shrimp tamales (with huitlacoche, ramps, wild mushrooms and truffle oil), and carne asada with black beans, corn and queso fresco. The menu will run at $45 per person (gratuity and tax not included).
McGillin's Olde Ale House (1310 Drury St.): Celebrate an Irish Cinco de Mayo (???) with fare like margaritas, Mexican food (and beers!), and ... a piñata. Also included on the menu will be drinks named for Charlie Sheen (tired meme, guys) alongside his pops Martin Sheen and peer Anthony Quinn, all of whom boast mixed Irish/Mexican heritage. The "Charlie Sheen Irish Margarita" is slated to use Jameson in lieu of tequila, and the Martin Sheen Margarita Beer's got marg mix, McGillin's ale and tequila. Be on the look out for the "Irish Chimichanga" — it apparently bears some relation to a cheesesteak. Regular menu also available.
Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.). From 6 to 9 this CdM, P&K is hosting a happy hour along with Nest, a non-profit that facilitates microloans, mentoring and other assistance to help female artisans around the world turn their hand-crafted items into successful businesses. The fundraiser, which will be held upstairs, is $25 at the door. Attendees will get access to light apps and drink specials; there will be a raffle and wares from various Nest loan recipients will be on sale, too.
Verdad Restaurant and Tequila Bar (818 W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr): Five-dollar margaritas all night, and at 10 p.m., taco prices drop to an astounding $2. Hit it up!
Xochitl (408 S. Second St.) Headhouse's Mexican eatery is pulling out all the stops and going cheap in honor of the holiday — they're offering Mexican street foods like tostadas de tinga (chipotle-braised chicken with crema, avocado and queso), and cemitas (milanese de pollo, avocado, queso, tomato, popalo and salsa chipotle). To top it off, their signature made-to-order margaritas will be deeply discounted to just $6 apiece.
