NOW OPEN: Flying Carpet Cafe

Francisville's newest eatery is brought to you by Abu Dhabi and Susan Sarandon.

OK let's explain.

The Flying Carpet Café, which just soft-opened on the corner of 19th and Poplar, is the brainchild of manager Kevin Young, who works as a traveling product development specialist. A year and a half ago, Young says, he was flying to consult on the development of a Kuwaiti shopping center when he found himself stuck on a 14-hour layover in an Abu Dhabi lounge — just him and Sarandon, who was en route to the Middle East Film Festival. "They just kept serving us food," recalls Young, a longtime Francisville resident. "They were making us these delicious tapas ... flavors from all over the world." He speaks Arabic, so he'd translate Sarandon's orders to the waitstaff.

Young sought out a comparable, and unfortunately Sarandon-less, experience when he returned to Philly, but came up empty — hence the opening of Flying Carpet, a liquor-licensed venture that opens early (7 a.m.) for breakfast sandwiches, teas and La Colombe coffee, and stays open late (midnight) for beer, wine and international small plates (Lebanese fare; knishes; panini) all priced under $10. Young works to highlight local vineyards — New Hope Winery's Cabernet Sauvignon is their house wine, currently. Expect the food and drink options to expand moving forward.

I just discovered this wonderful cafe yesterday and wrote a post about it on my blog Tinsel & Tine. Wish I had know about the Susan Sarandon tie-in, as I write about both food and film (a take on tinseltown using the tines of a fork) tinseltine.com

i'm not often compelled to rake a business through the mud online without voicing my displeasure to the management first, but when the management itself is batshit insane, one feels like they need to be heard. go read their yelp reviews before you step foot in this place! terrrrrible.
