Last week we took a peek at Rebel Rock Bar & Bites (100 Spring Garden St.), the new bar, restaurant and live music concept from the owners of Delilah's and Zee Bar, ahead of its grand opening this Thursday, Jan. 26.

Located in the same NoLibs complex as that gentlemen's club and after-hours hang, Rebel is an unexpectedly sophisticated space — brand-new wood outfits the high-ceilinged building, softening the aged look brought on by exposed-brick walls. Chef Tim Brockman, a Philly native who recently returned after cooking in NYC, has pimped out the menu, offering takes on gastropub staples — cheesesteak wontons with A1 aioli; pork belly sliders; a "barnyard burger" complete with pork belly, sunny egg, sriracha and truffle oil. These offerings are in addition to a choice of french fries done six ways (including gravy) and three sweet "encore" options (funnel cake with Grand Marnier dipping sauce!). We snagged some cheese fries along with the turkey burger, served banh mi-style on a baguette with pickled vegetables.

The most outstanding feature at Rebel is its tableside drafts — this the only bar in Pennsylvania that has them, and one of just six establishments in the country. Management provides a how-to-pour sheet handy in case you've never been behind a bar (though surely you remember something from all those college keggers?). A computerized system keeps track of each table's pours; after you pull 12 pints, a server will come by to make sure you are still alive/coherent. If you are, you can keep on pouring.

This week is full of grand-opening events in addition to Thursday's invite-only shindig; check rebelphiladelphia.com and follow them on Twitter (@RebelRockBar) for up-to-date information. A regular band schedule will be appear once they've officially launched. Brunch service will begin then, too; Brockman promises eats like sausage gravy and biscuits on that menu. And check back here in the near future; Happy Hour Hopper might be headed to Rebel to take advantage of their 5-to-8 p.m. specials sooner rather than later.
