NOW OPEN: Rittenhouse Tavern

We posted some preview pics of Rittenhouse Tavern (Art Alliance, 251 S. 18th St.) a few weeks ago, and the day we teased then has arrived — tonight at 5 p.m., exec chef Nicholas Elmi (formerly of Le Bec-Fin) and "chef collaborator" Ed Brown (VP of Restaurant Associates) along with FOH manager Dan Elliott, are opening the Tavern's doors officially after some sneak-peek services over the weekend.

Rittenhouse Tavern aspires to be an upscale-yet-casual neighborhood spot, and Brown and Elmi's menu reflects that idea. They're doing dishes like crispy frog legs with cress, finger pepper and cream cheese; deviled eggs atop pork scrapple; and a Sunday fried chicken supper, family-style whole fried Amish chicken with buttermilk biscuits and a daily side ($18 per person). They also offer more upmarket plates, like Creekstone hanger steak with roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions and potato cannons; Alaskan halibut with shellfish broth, squid and sea beans over wild rice; and a rack of crisp Berkshire pork belly with purple mustard, quinoa crust and endive.

To drink, there are options like the EB Manhattan (Rittenhouse rye, Dolin sweet and dry vermouths) crafted by Brown; the Betsy Ross (Gordon's gin, Cocchi Americano, St. Germain) and a RT Negroni (Bluecoat gin, Carpano Antica, Campari), as well as extensive beer, wine and whiskey lists. Elmi and Brown are working on upcoming lunch and brunch menus, but for now the Tavern is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday and from 5 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
