NOW OPEN: Venice Café

Griddling crepes and baking chocolate-ricotta crostadas for about two months, the Italophilic Venice Café (2015 E. Moyamensing Ave.) is weaving itself into the fabric of Pennsport, one Counter Culture coffee at a time. The space that formerly housed American BYOB Nicholas has been brightened with new lighting, live plants and walls the color of tangerines and lemon soufflé. Venetian Carnevale masks, flags, gondola figurines and other knickknacks flavor the room, which is dominated by a hardwood bar and glass pastry case.

You order at the bar from one of the tall, raven-haired sisters who work here, take a seat, enjoy the shorter sister's melodic voice as she sings softly along to Adele playing over the sound system and wait for breakfast, lunch or dinner. While croissants, bagels and muffins seem to be the main draw, Venice also makes a variety of salads and sandwiches (cold and panini-pressed), with a big batch of soup du jour steaming away in the back, served till 6 p.m. nightly or until it runs out. Check the full menu on their Facebook page.
