Notes from the Weekend: January 7

POSTED: Monday, January 7, 2013, 5:03 PM

Notes from the Weekend is a feature that sees the members of Team Meal Ticket compiling all the food/drink highlights uncovered during prime eatin' time, Friday to Sunday. We'd love to hear all about YOUR weekend eating adventures in the comments. Go for it! (View past NFTW installments at citypaper.net/notes.)

Suffering from equal parts post-holiday doldrums and a peskily debilitating cold, my weekend eats mostly involved liquids and Halls. (Too bad you didn't get to see the previous weekend's bacchanalia of Baltimore, Le Virtu and new year's day brunch...) We mostly cooked, but ordered in on Friday from take-out go-to Fuel, whose hummus is really way better than you'd think: creamy, whipped to an airy fluff and furnished with fresh thyme and lemon zest.—AE

Friday kicked off with a farewell happy hour at The Khyber for City Paper Movies Editor Josh Middleton who has moved on to the greener pastures of blogging for G Philly. Celebratory Sazeracs were shared. Waiting around for 8:30 reservations at Fork, I headed to the upstairs bar at Eulogy for a few tart pours of Blanche de Bruxelles and then over to Fork where chef Eli Kulp let me and a few friends from out of town sit back and enjoy one of the most glorious meals in recent memory. We basically ate everything on the menu including the whole Muscovy duck Peking-style, caviar and bagel chips and vitello tonnato and waited around for LaBan's sterling three-bell review to drop.—CR

This was a weekend of sandwhiches. It started on Friday night with a lightly toasted BLT from Capogiro, where I met my friend after work for happy hour. She sipped an old fashioned and a subsequent hot toddy, while I made do with an Americano and the panini. Later in the eve, a different pal and I drove down to the Ritz at the Bourse to see Anna Karenina, which proved to be a dizzying  feast for the senses. And the Ritz's buttered popcorn never disappoints.—EK

The four bottles of Gamay plus a bottle of cremant (oh and cocktails and beers) that we put away at Fork made for a slow going morning. When we finally rallied in the late afternoon, I decided our best bet was American Sardine Bar for a hangover-crushing meal of giant sandwiches and beer. A patty melt, vegan mushroom and potato pambazo, Drew Lazor's Dad Sandwich (more on that in a bit) plus sides of brussels sprouts and hot dog and pepper hash-topped Gatsby fries did the trick. A nap later I made my way up to Johnny Brenda's for a couple of Kenzingers and an awesome set by Sun Airway.—CR

After a medoicre falafel at a working lunch (hey, it was free), things started looking up on Saturday night with a trip to the Sardine Bar. Ry and I ordered the tomato cider soup with a grilled cheese crouton (such a nice touch), the salt and pepper fries, an egg, potato, broccoli rabe and provolone sandwhich, and Drew Lazor's Dad's Sandwhich. I don't know Drew's dad, but I imagine he is a special, special man to have inspired or perhaps invented such a creation: turkey, pork roll and jalapenos under a oozy blanket of cheddar and a smear of dijonaise, all topped with a sprinkle of BBQ chips - on texas toast! If your brow is furrowed upon reading this list, ufurrow it! This oddball ingredients of this sandwhich just somehow worked splendidly together, and the whole thing had the carefree air of a stoner snack scavenged from the depths of the fridge.—EK

Classy Sunday brunch was a slice of leftover Stogie Joe's square pie with sausage and broccoli rabe accompanied by a few hours of mind-numbing sitcoms. Around dinnertime I debated my dining options and decided to sick close to home. Settling in at the bar at the South Philly Tap Room with a glass of apple-y Éphémère from Unibroue I went with salmon ceviche with grapefruit, pineapple, avocado and serranos and a fried tilapia sandwich with American cheese and tartar sauce.—CR

Sunday brought another morning spent at work and another so-so sandwhich (this time from Corner Bakery), but I was rewarded afterward with fresh baked vegan banana bread and tea at a friend's apartment. Inspired by  the warm-ish weather, Ryan fired up the grill and served spicy chicken legs as a mid-afternoon snack. Dinner was homemade cornbread and a giant pot of three-bean turkey chili, which simmered for no less than four hours and made the whole house smell spicy and tomato-y. Some time after 9, feeling restless and somehow still hungry, the two of us drove cross town for a bonus slice of Queenie Delouche from Pizza Brain (fontina, goat cheese, mozarella, shiitake and portabella) and two scoops of ice cream from the neighboring Little Baby's (chocolate chocolate chip cookie dough and almond anise ammaretti). Finally sated, it was back to West Philly for digestion and chill time for the last few hours of the weekend.—EK
