Filed Under: Notes from the Weekend

Notes from the Weekend is a feature that sees the members of Team Meal Ticket compiling all the food/drink highlights uncovered during prime eatin' time, Friday to Sunday. Consider this a place for good deals, great dishes, wicked cocktails, recipe triumphs (and tragedies), bizarro conversations and more. We're eager to share our notes, but especially excited to read yours. We encourage you to leave notes from YOUR weekend in the comments. Have at it! (View past NFTW installments at citypaper.net/notes.)

It's a slimmed-down installment of Notes from the Weekend. It'll look good in a bathing suit at the shore.

You know those days when you have a million important things to do, but you wind up doing something completely trivial and unnecessary (like make garlic scape pesto) instead? That was my Friday morning, but the procrastination turned out to be a boon Friday night when I marinated chicken breasts in the pulpy green paste before throwing them on the grill. —AE

Toddler-wrangling duties kept Friday and Saturday meals pretty ho-hum this week (although the 5-year-old likes her nuggets served on a penguin plate, which does tend to improve the atmosphere). —TE

Swung by the Rittenhouse Square farmers' market (18th and Walnut) early Saturday morning. Copped some fat tomatoes, wild mushrooms and three soups from Good Spoon soups. Had the minty English pea (pictured) for lunch, hearty kale/lentil (with mussels and sprouted-wheat angel hair for dinner) and refreshing strawberry-rhubarb for dessert. —AE

More farmers' marketing Sunday at Headhouse (2nd and Lombard). Bought beets, Market Day canele for my grandmom (awww!), apricots, berries and cherries and still had enough left over for a Lucky Old Souls burger topped with bacon, pickled green tomato and Hillacres habanero cheddar. Was in Jersey later on and stopped at the Pop Shop (729 Haddon Ave.) for burgers and fries ... and an obnoxiously large sundae that put me in a coma for the rest of the evening. —AE

Made a Mexican-ish beef stew on Sunday, using lots of oregano from the garden. Meant to tang up the rice with some chopped lemon thyme, the first time using this recent addition to the garden, but definitely should have added lots more. Live and learn! A basic guac with lots of fresh lime juice rounded things out. —TE
