Notes from the Weekend: March 11
This weekend Team Meal ticket was plenty busy beer festivals, food writers' dinners and hittin' up hot spots in Atlanta, er, Hotlanta?
Notes from the Weekend: March 11

Notes from the Weekend is a feature that sees the members of Team Meal Ticket compiling all the food/drink highlights uncovered during prime eatin' time, Friday to Sunday. We'd love to hear all about YOUR weekend eating adventures in the comments. Go for it! (View past NFTW installments at citypaper.net/notes.)

I spent the weekend in Atlanta (Hi, Atlanta!) and ate A LOT. So in lieu of traditional Notes from the Weekend, I present my edible souvenirs in captioned Pic Stitch form...

The Optimist: Think Oyster House but bigger and brighter, with a light-flooded dining room, house-baked "Saltines" and sparkly waitresses. The "soppin toast," thick-cut grilled bread supporting generously sauced Georgia shrimp stole the spotlight from those shrimp.—AE
Cardamom Hill: Think Tashan but smaller and homier, with a $15 lunch special featuring Kerala-style fried chicken and waffles and spiced syrup, a dish indicative of the chef's Indian-Southern mash-up style.—AE

I'm going to go ahead and blame the frozen mint julep machine at Khyber for the fact that Friday's after work happy hour extended well into the wee hours and involved a liquid dinner. Thanks a lot, julep machine.—CR
Friday night was a chill dinner at home (baked tofu and mashed potatoes with chickpea gravy and a big ass salad with bacon vinaigrette), followed by a raging house party in South Philly. In addition to a keg and a bunch of booze, said party also excelled on the snack front: potato pizzas from La Rosa, and at least three kinds of coconut and chocolate based gluten free desserts. Alcohol + sugar makes for hyper late 20-somethings.—EK

The General Muir: A weeks-old neo-deli in a suburban strip mall that looks not unlike the crisp Hartsfield Jackson rental car compound. Beautiful room with white subway tiles and globe lights wrapped in braided chicken wire. Terrific lox, chopped chicken liver, mocha egg creams and service.—AE
Saturday afternoon I headed over to the South Philly Taproom for a breakfast burrito and a pint of Commonwealth Lemongrass Ginger Cider. After a trip out to the burbs for a family party I headed over to Adobe Cafe for some always entertaining karaoke.—CR

On Saturday, Ry and I fought the Craft Beer Express crowds at the Sidecar and got two seats at the upstairs bar. I don't know what it is about that place, but their breakfast burritos always do me so good. Homemade BLT clubs sufficed for dinner, and the evening was a fun stay-in with my sister. We made a lovely apple and wine-soaked prune clafoutis from Homemade Winter, and watched the shockingly good Beyonce documentary on HBO.—EK

On Sunday I made a quick stop at Brewer's Plate before making my way down to Industry for a totally amazing dinner. Remember a while back when we told you about a Philadelphia food writers-inspired menu that chef Pat Szoke was putting together? Well, last night was the trail run and we've got to say that there were some pretty out of control dishes happening including kampachi crudo with pomegranate vinaigrette, pomegranate seeds and shaved radish from the favorites list of Adam Erace, gnocchi with duck sausage and kimchi from the playbook of yours truly and garlic fried rice with crispy SPAM, fried egg and cherry tomatoes from Drew Lazor. These plus contributions from Grub Street, Foobooz, Zagat Philly, Eater and The Insider are going to be running as specials sometime in the very near future and we'll be sure to keep you posted. —CR

Heirloom Market BBQ: Charming smoked meat hut next to a convenience store off the highway in suburban ATL. The barbecue was so-so, a bit dry. The Korean pulled pork sandwich topped with kimchi coleslaw was the clear winner.—AE
Empire State South: Hugh Acheson's ATL jewel. Went for brunch and really liked the pimento cheese with bacon marmalade and the crispy discs of scrapple (yes, scrapple!) in a cast iron skillet.—AE

A nice bagel and bialy spread, with fruit salad and coffee was a relaxing Sunday brunch with my dad. I took it easy with snacking for the rest of the day, since I had the Brewer's Plate later that evening to prepare for. So with stomach rumbling, I entered the doors of the National Constitution Center and was immediately caught up in a whirlwind of food and drink. All of the restaurant participants rocked it out (the bacon sausage sandwich from Brauhaus Schmitz was especially memorable, as was the Dock Street Man Full of Trouble Porter ice cream from Weckerly's), and there were some cool beers, too (Forest & Main was a favorite). Stoned on cheese and sugar, I finished the night in front of the TV, nursing a big plate of raw, undressed vegetables.—EK
