One last dinner at James

Stopped into James (824 S. Eighth St.) and snagged a pair of stools last night — though Jim and Kristina Burke originally planned to call it a day at this location in June, they announced earlier this week that this Saturday will be their final night of service. Get on it — I hear they're pretty booked up for tonight, but there are still some Saturday slots; regardless, you can always show up and hold it down at the bar like us.

Adam Erace — who, incidentally, was in the building (at the bar! go to the bar) last night too — already broke down what the Burkes have planned for the immediate future in early April, so let's just concentrate on what you should eat when you go this weekend. Delicate hamachi crudo: yes. A bowl of Pernod-scented cioppino: yes. Salty, crispy roasted chicken with mushrooms, cauliflower, Brussels, breakfast radishes and mushrooms: double yes. Jim's signature pappardelle with duck ragu, shaved-tableside chocolate and orange: yes. Fennel pollen risotto with langoustine tartare: LARGE-LETTER YES.

I've had more than a few great meals here, November's Green Meadow farm dinner being one of the absolute best. It was very sad to tip our hats to James one last time — Kristina, the consummate hostess, doled out more warm hugs to diners in two hours than I've given in 2011 thus far — but we were full and happy as hell on the way out. If you think about it like that — and also remember than the Burkes are going to end up somewhere new, doing something new, sooner rather than later — then it's not really sad at all. Cheers to James.
