Paris Wine Bar, from London Grill, opens next week

Stopped by London Grill (2301 Fairmount Ave.) last week to eyeball the room they're unveiling as Paris Wine Bar next Thursday, Feb. 9.

Accessible via both London's 23rd Street entrance and a dedicated door on Fairmount, the Paris space was most recently an insurance office; before this, it was London Grill Next Door, a coffeeshop owner Terry Berch McNally operated until 2009. Now, McNally and beverage manager Cristina Tessaro have brought in a state-of-the-art MicroMatic draft system (above) for their specialized, new-to-Philly concept — a bar pouring a kegged selection of wines strictly from Pennsylvania.

In contrast to the more common Cruvinet system, which keeps uncorked bottles fresh for by-the-glass pours, all the vino at Paris will be kegged, just like beer, by grape growers in Lehigh, Berks, York and Chester counties. Tessaro says the system's stainless steel outfitting and flavor-lock tubing will ensure long-term quality of the juice; Pinnacle Ridge, Galen Glen and Manatawny Creek are but three Commonwealth wineries keeping Paris stocked. "It's an extension of what we do already," says McNally of her decision to tap PA wines exclusively, a move that might confuse some more outward-looking oenophiles. "[There's a] misonception that Pennsylvania wine is bad wine. I hear it all the time. But hey, these winemakers are growing right here, in a beautiful state ... this is good stuff."

Paris will offer both 3-ounce and full-on pours in addition to quartinos (a glass and a half), carafes and flights. Prices wil range from $6.50 to $9.50, and McNally says they'll do $4 glasses during happy hour, running weekdays from 5 to 7 and Saturdays from 3 to 5. The debut of the new wine bar coincides a menu relaunch from chef Michael McNally, who, not coincidentally, has added Gallic touches aplenty to his latest bill of fare, launching today.
