Party on the Farm: Early Fall Festival Guide

POSTED: Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 11:15 AM

Saying goodbye to summer is hard. Local swimming pools and water ice stands shutter their doors; the morning commute is clogged with school buses ferrying children back to school. Berries, melons, tomatoes and peaches become scarce on market tables, and there is no coda once the season has past. But the autumn holds its own deep pleasures, and local farms are busy planning harvest parties sure to make this transition just a little easier for us all. So dig your favorite flannel out from the back of your closet and high tail it to one of these country shindigs.

Linvilla Orchards Apple Festival: On September 22 and 23rd, Linvilla will hold their annual Apple Festival at their lovely location in Media, PA. Expect an apple pie eating contest, pick-your-own apples, candied apples, and more! Pony rides, hayrides, and games will keep the kiddies entertained. The Festival runs both days - picking starts at 8 a.m., pie eating contest registration opens at 11 a.m., and activities run through the late morning and afternoon.

Party in the dark at The Market at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, from October 5 to October 28, families are invited to a nighttime event called Moonlit Fun. Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights and explore the corn maze in the dark. Bonfires and hayrides are also on the moonlit agenda. $7.50 per person, runs from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. â€¨

October 6th is a big day for Farm Parties!

Frecon Farms 6th Annual Pickfest, scheduled the 6th from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., will feature half a dozen celebrated local bluegrass acts, pick-your-own fruit, a hard cider and wine garden, and kids’ games. Advance tickets are $7, on sale on September first, and are $10 at the door. Frecon Farms is about 48 miles northwest of Philadelphia in Boyertown, PA. â€¨

The fun on the 6th continues at PennyPack Farms in Horsham, PA. Their take on the Harvest Festival will include face painting, scarecrow making, bug hunts, pumpkin painting and other crafty activities for children. Hay rides, local food and live music should keep the adults happy, too. The festival runs from 11 a.m. -5 p.m. and is free to the public. â€¨

If you lack wheels or just want to keep it local, Greensgrow Farm in Kensington is also throwing a party on October 6th: The 5th Annual Subaru Fall Festival. Music, workshops, PAWS adopt-a-pet, a craft bazaar, chili cook-off, and of course local food vendors create a well rounded event to celebrate autumn’s return. Free to the public, and will go from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., rain or shine.
