Philadelphia Food Truck Association to hold first meeting

The growth of Philly's food-truck culture in the past calendar year is birthing collaboration — Andrew Gerson of the soon-to-launch Strada Pasta is working with other local street-food-entrepreneurs to found the Philly Food Truck Association, which will host its very first meeting next Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Free Library (1901 Vine St.).

"We want Philly to follow the model of a lot of other cities that have aided in the proliferation of food trucks and seen the positive benefits," says Gerson, who actually wrote his collegiate thesis on how trucks can promote sustainable agriculture in urban environments. This first meeting, which Gerson and Co. encourage food-truck vendors old and new to attend (the public is welcome, as well), will focus on establishing the group's bylaws and operational strategy; its mission, says Gerson, is "to create a communal voice and aid in resource-sharing" among the food truck community.

Topics the PFTA hopes to address include "eradicating some of the hurdles" that small mobile business owners face municipally (heavy health department and zoning red tape; the city's "prohibited streets" guidelines), building up shared commissaries for trucks and cultivating "alternative eating spaces," capitalizing on the thousands of vacant and abandoned lots within city limits.

For more info on the meeting and association, contact Gerson at 215-480-7606 or stradapasta@gmail.com.
