Philly's Summer of Riesling

The three-year-old Summer of Riesling is a wine-lover's promotion, with the blessing of the International Riesling Foundation, designed to steer drinkers toward the white grape most people identify first with Germany and second with being overly sweet. Though more than 60 percent of the world's Riesling vines do grow in Deutschland, it's a misconception ("a hackneyed belief," officially) that all Rieslings are cloying. Multiple bars and restaurants in multiple cities, Philly included, have signed on to pour three Rieslings by the glass all summer long, in addition to organizing Riesling-based events.
- At Jet Wine Bar (1525 South St.), they'll swap out their three-Riesling lineup every two week or so, and offer flights, as well. Owner Jill Weber say they'll also be mixing Riesling-based cocktails and offering special Rieslings by the bottle. Events are definitely in the works involving Jet, including a potential collaboration with neighbors and fellow SoR participants Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) and Fish (1708 Lombard St.).
- Tria (123 S. 18th St./1137 Spruce St.) and Biba (3131 Walnut St.) are pimping out its three Rieslings to drinkers, and there's a plan to work Riesling varieties into Tria's weekly "Sunday School" rotation, too.
- Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.), naturally, is game to celebrate anything Teutonic, stein-worthy or not. Bar manager Alyssa Wegner says they're offering a flight of three two-ounce Riesling pours (Rudi Wiest Rhein, SA Prum Essence Mosel and Liebfrauenstift Dry) throughout the summer. There's also talk of a Riesling dinner that'll go down toward the end of this month.
- Out on the Main Line, Savona (100 Old Gulph Road, Gulph Mills) is switching up its Riesling selection every week, shifting the focus around between different styles and regions. Last week, beverage manager/master sommelier Melissa Monosoff poured Rieslings from Germany, Washington State and Chile; moving forward, look for options from Austria and Australia. Monosoff will also lead an upcoming wine class focused solely on the grape.
