Philly's Barcade (1114 Frankford Ave.), in the works since the spring of 2010, is very close to opening, if a recent swingthru was any indication. Some city paperwork is all that's really holding back the five owners, who have locations in Williamsburg and Jersey City, from rolling out their craft beer/vintage video game combo concept in Fishtown.

Set in a former electronic supply warehouse on Frankford Avenue (right between Columbus and Girard), Barcade Philly's got a lineup of about 30 arcade machines, from must-haves (Galaga, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Tetris) to games exclusive to the 215 (Carnival, Asteroids Deluxe, Burger Time). Plays will run a quarter a pop, just like the good ol' days. That's co-owner Pete Langway above, trying his hand at Tapper, a Budweiser-themed bartending game; he's quick to highlight what he refers to as his "D&D" wall, stocked with fantasy fare like Ghosts and Goblins, Magic Sword and Gauntlet II.

Just like their other locations, Barcade will pour an all-American, all-draft beer selection (with one cask); they'll also offer a menu of "handheld" food, like hot and cold pressed sandwiches, pickles and pretzels. Plenty of seating, with a big bar and a few low tables up front and long communal-style perches on the game floor. A huge bike rack and an outdoor seating area are in the works for the lot adjacent to the building.

We'll keep you posted on the bar's impending opening; in the meantime, drop a line if anyone's trying to run shit on the Double Dragon machine (that's my jam!).
