Phyllis Stein-Novack isn't mad at The Blind Pig

POSTED: Thursday, March 7, 2013, 1:16 PM

In this week's South Philly Review Phyllis Stein-Novack makes her way north to The Blind Pig (702 N. 2nd St.) in search of the perfect burger. And that burger has a few requirements: well seasoned beef, seared to medium rare and please, no fancy roll, PSN detests them. (Spoiler: she's still looking.)

PSN was pleased to find a burger on the menu at posted outside of The Blind Pig. She ventured in, ordered a pilsner and waited for hubby/trusty dining companion Edward to join her. While watching college basketball, the pair came up with a menu plan: two salads, an oyster po boy and a burger.

Although it was overdressed, an arugula salad (with lardoons!) passed muster. The second salad was your run of the mill beet salad with walnuts and gorgonzola. Aside from also being over dressed, no big complaints here although PSN would have liked to have seen some romaine in the mix for texture.

PSN and Edward agreed that the bacon and mustard in their fried oyster sandwich overshadowed the naturally sweet, slightly salty bivalves. They would have much preferred "a slathering of tartar sauce and a hint of freshly squeezed lemon juice would do the culinary trick."

PSN wan't mad at the $10 price tag on the Blinf Pig's burger but underseasoned beef and lack of a solid sear disappointed. Although she was pleased with the soft and not to thick roll on which the burger was served. Points too for the fries which were the opposite of the dreadful, ghastly greasy variety.

So, what's the PSN verdict on The Blind Pig? Looks like passable food plus excellent service equals two and a half tips of the toque.
