Recapping: The 2012 Fair Food Philly Brewer's Plate

The long lines outside the National Constitution Center yesterday had nothing to do with its ongoing Bruce Springsteen exhibition. Once inside, the dense crowds of beer drinkers had zip to do with the continuing St. Patrick's Day preview. OK, not exactly zip.

On Sunday, March 11, the NCC hosted Fair Food Philly's eighth annual Brewer's Plate, a sold-out tasting affair celebrating regional (within 150 miles) restaurants, craft breweries, farmers and artisanal producers. There was a sweets-centric speakeasy room where the swingin' Hot Club of Philadelphia held court while fans of Night Kitchen Bakery ate chocolate-on-chocolate cupcakes, Gilda's biscotti and creamy stuff from Capogiro. There was a VIP spot where Subarashi Judamono displayed Asian pear treats, Country Time Farm cooked up tender roasted pork and pistachio-laced pate and chef Jose Garces presented a beer-soaked cooking demo of Distrito's Victory Golden Monkey-braised pork and salsa verde tacos.

Food highlights? Dozens. Fork did a helluva Spanish mackerel with coriander, orange jam and sliced scallion. White Dog Café offered a dynamic mouthful of Sweet Stem Farm ham and cheese in slider form. As I was heading to Tria's BlueMont Reserve raw cow's milk cheddar display, Grub Street's Collin Keefe told me to taste the dark and lovely Exit 8 Chestnut Brown Ale from Flying Fish. Brauhaus Schmitz was doling out beer-cooked sausage and smoked sauerkraut. Cured day boat scallops with preserved lemon and pickled sunchokes from Stateside were exceptional with a cool Nodding Head pale. Southwark served up "MLTs' (mutton, lettuce and tomato) that, when followed up by Triumph's teamup with Franklin Fountain (schwarzbier plus vanilla ice cream) made for a real dinner-and-dessert treat. If you were looking to really gorge yourself, you piled Eclat Chocolate and Victory beer truffles on top of everything else. Oy.
