Recapping: The Food Trust's University City Night Market

As temps hit triple digits yesterday afternoon, dozens of food vendors set up shop in University City and prepared to feed the masses at the second installment of The Food Trust's Night Market.

Readers may recall Juliana Reyes' account of the inaugural Night Market back in October. That event, held along Passyunk Avenue in South Philly, was a hit, but massive turnout resulted in long lines and not enough food to go around (Coup de Taco, for example, ran out of supplies two hours into the four-hour event). This time, though, twice as many food trucks were asked to participate, and, according to Food Trust communications manager April White, all the operations were encouraged to prepare twice the food.

In addition to hosting about 30 food trucks, the Night Market featured a centralized beer garden operated by the Blockley Pourhouse in honor of Philly Beer Week. The six beers available were all regional, ranging from Ithaca's Apricot Wheat to Victory's new Headwaters Pale Ale. When we arrived a half-hour into the festivities, the crowd was a decent size, and as time wore on, lines began to grow. Still, some trucks were clearly more popular than others. Korean- and Thai-inspired food truck Tyson Bees (above) was a clear favorite, serving up edamame tacos and steamed pork buns, as was Jose Garces' Guapos Tacos, judging by the crush of people standing in front of it. Other operations, though, like the lesser-known Crepewalk and Sweetbox, seemed to have difficulty attracting customers.

Despite the best intentions of event organizers, natural forces conspired against the Night Market when dark clouds rolled in at around 7:45 p.m. By 8, rain was hitting the pavement and people were running for cover. The Food Trust has already announced plans to organize a third Night Market, to be held sometime in the coming months.
