SNACK TIME: A love letter to FedNuts, iodine in the water, how to smuggle meat unsuccessfully, death before bacon, an edible cookbook, chicken and waffles syrup, more good food linkage, and the Food Network knows more than us
- Brad Podray, the poet behind the Han Dynasty rap, has penned yet another ode; this time, he's professing his love to Federal Donuts. Podray loves FedNuts so much that he says he would lick [chili garlic glaze] off a chainsaw that's on in front of [his] mom." Yo, that is some serious dedication right there.
- Since 2007, high levels of iodine have been found in water treatment facilities in the Philadelphia area. Experts have been trying to figure out what's causing the spike and have crossed the most likely possible sources, like nuclear power plants or large medical centers, off of their list. That leaves who? Thyroid patients, who "sweat or urinate iodine that is not absorbed by their bodies after they take it for treatment." Suggestions from local hospitals on how to minimize iodine exposure to water include cleaning showers and toilet seats after use and having separate sets of silverware. The issue is serious, but last I checked, thyroid patients weren't lepers.
- An Illinois man was charged with theft after smuggling 11 packages of meat in his pants from the supermarket where he works. How do you fit 11 packages of meat in your pants? They must've been sweatpants. None of this skinny jeans business the kids are into these days.
- Everything is bacon-wrapped these days — shrimp, scallops, dates and even the deceased. This bacon-themed casket retails for $2,999.99 and comes with a complimentary bacon air freshener.
- Korefe, a German design firm, and Gerstenberg Publishing House recently issued their newest project, an edible cookbook. The Real Cookbook is made out of sheets of pasta with recipes embossed on them. No need to find extra counter space for the book; you can just bake it right into your lasagna.
- Torani, purveyor of those fancy-looking syrups you see at coffee shops, has come out with a new flavor. Their chicken n' waffles syrup is perfect "to top off your cocktails, coffees and sauces with the heavenly combo of fried chicken and waffles." How po-mo would it be to put the syrup on chicken and waffles?
- Snack Time shoutout to another Snack Time-style roundup: Thought Catalog has neatly summed up the important events this week with This Week In Food. Hot topics include pink slime, an actual hamburglar and the most recent lawsuits against McDonald's.
- The Food Network has a magazine, and in that magazine they've printed the 100 Greatest Cooking Tips (of all time!). Even in a short, somewhat helpful sentence, Guy Fieri still manages to grate (get it?!) on America's nerves.
