Splendid indeed: Jeni's Spendid Ice Cream

POSTED: Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 11:30 AM

At the end of a Sunday barbecue resplendent with organic meats, butter smothered grilled vegetables, chips and dips, and a fridge full of beers, what more could you ask for? Then out from the kitchen comes the host, triumphantly holding two pints of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream.

Spoons eagerly dig in to the slowly melting tubs of dark chocolate and wildberry lavender. The dark chocolate is all-encompassing, hypnotizing; for a moment you forget there are other things in this world besides cocoa, milk and sugar. Wildberry lavender is tart and subtly floral, and a wondrous purple hue rarely assigned to products of natural origin.

As a company, Ohio-based Jeni’s is next level. All the ingredients for her small batch goods, like milk from Snowville Creamery and chocolate from Missouri's Askinosie, are sourced from like minded folks. The list of flavors (roasted strawberry buttermilk, anyone?) is enough to bring a tear to an ice cream lover’s eye. Even the package design is spot on.

Homebodies among us, rejoice: a dizzying array of products can be purchased from the Jeni’s website and delivered – still frozen! - right to your doorstep. Road warriors: there are a dozen Jeni’s Scoop Shop locations across Ohio and Tennessee. Otherwise, Jeni’s can be found in local Whole Foods, as well as Martindale’s Natural Market in Springfield, PA.
