Spread Bagelry (262 S. 20th St.), which has been baking full throttle since mucking through a series of unforeseen delays this spring, is expanding. Owner Larry Rosenblum tells Meal Ticket that he's just signed a lease for what was, until recently, Brown Betty Petite (269 S. 20th St.), the space just across 20th Street from his Montreal-style bagel oven. Spread Bake Shop will specialize in muffins, biscotti, scones and pies baked on the premises, and they'll sell loose bagels to go for those who don't want to fall in line across the way. Their signature item, Rosenblum says, will be diner-style scratchmade grilled corn muffins served with artisanal butters and jams. Look for it to open in spring 2012.
