If we're talking Spodee flavor profiles, Tootsie Pops and Dr. Pepper are a good jumping off point.

State Store: Spodee, wine with a kick

POSTED: Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 12:05 PM

Note: Welcome to State Store, a column where we hit the Wine & Spirits shops of Philly and see what's new and noteworthy or just plain weird.

One of the more curious bottles to hit the State Store shelves as of late is a odd concoction called Spodee. Packaged in a pint-sized milk bottle and stopped with an oversized cork, this fortified wine bills itself as depression-era hooch and tastes, well, unique describes it pretty well.

Crack open the bottle, give it a good whiff and you'll get the picture. It's basically red wine spiked with moonshine and chocolate flavor. If you're thinking that it's an odd combo, that's because it is. If we're talking flavor profiles, Tootsie Pops and Dr. Pepper are a good jumping off point.

Since being introduced around town this singularly strange sipper has made its way into fig preserves at Green Aisle Grocery and Little Baby's Ice Cream has swirled it into their Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream.

Steve Wildy, beverage director extraordinaire of the Vetri Family is still searching for the right application for Spodee. "It has a childhood snack-like quality to it that's intriguing, like a spiked Little Debbie Zebra Cake or like if you mixed a bowl of Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles (i.e. bedrock blizzard!), and poured wine over it. I've been trying to work it into a beer cocktail but no promises!"

When asked about Spodee, London Grill bar manager Cristina Tessaro responded with a perplexed look and a touch of tredipation in her voice when talking about the "chocolaty-winey drink."

Dear Meal Ticketeers, have you tried Spodee? And if the answer is yes, what are your thoughts? Have you worked into a genius cocktail? Or incorporated into a baking project? There's a weirdness about this stuff that has us intrigued and maybe a little scared.

Please feel free to share all of your choco-wine related thoughts in the comments section.
