Taste Test: Stuffed long hots from Nick's Roast Beef

Passing by Nick's Roast Beef (16 S. 2nd St.) today a chalk board advertising stuffed long hots was too intriguing to pass up.

Here's what the menu had to say about this unique to Philly take on the popper:

"Hand selected long hot peppers direst from the Italian Market same day, stuffed with sharp provolone and proscuitto, gently grilled to perfection."

Sounds like a dream mash-up of a pepper shooter and a jalapeño popper, these peppers are served three two an order on a bed of romaine accompanied by a cup of spicy marinara and a few slices of garlic crostini.

The verdict? Pretty darned tasty, salty and cheesy with plenty of heat from the not at all deseeded peppers. The marinara gives them a welcome hit of tomato-y acidity but the stale-ish crostini were pretty much a throwaway.

Hot dog lovers take note, Nick's also has a hello, heartburn dog tucked into a bun alongside a stuffed long hot on the menu.
