The best of the best: Philly edition

POSTED: Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 3:20 PM

Today we're doing a round-up of Philly eats that have garnered national attention by being among the best in the country. Get ready for grilled cheese, fried chicken, coffee, and a mushroom fest.

1. Best Fried Chicken in the U.S. – Food and Wine Magazine

Chef Prensky caught F&W's attention with his pastrami fried chicken at Supper (926 South St.). No, it isn't made with pastrami, but Prensky uses pastrami in the brine and in the crunchy coating. Two can split half a bird, sides and biscuits for $25 every Tuesday.

2. Best Pizza Places in the U.S. - Food and Wine Magazine

We have all heard of Marc Vetri's famous stone-oven pizza at Osteria (640 N. Broad St.), and now the rest of the country knows that New York isn't the only pizza destination in the northeast. Philadelphia Magazine hails the Parma with mozzarella, fontina, prosciutto and arugula as the best pizza in Philly, but F&W was also captivated by the Lombarda pie with a runny, Cotechino sausage, mozzarella and bitto cheese.

3. Best Grilled Cheese in the U.S. - Food and Wine Magazine

Sandwich genius Scott Schroeder serves up the perfect grilled cheese and tomato soup combo at the South Philadelphia Tap Room (1509 Mifflin St.). He incorporates local Lancaster County smoked cheddar into his 3 cheese masterpiece along with sharp provolone and American, and then slathers the bread in garlic-herb butter before crisping it up on the crisping it up on the griddle. The key ingredient in the tomato soup is beer, naturally.

4. America's Best Coffee Bars – Food and Wine Magazine

La Colombe Torrefaction (multiple locations) now has branches from New York City to Seoul, but its roots are firmly in Philadelphia. The company adheres to 5 principles: fair trade beans, long-term trade commitments, opportunity given to nations the most in need, water access to the supplier farmers and their families, and buying from strictly earth conscious suppliers only. This is a cup you can feel good about.

5. America's Best Food Festivals – Gourmet Magazine

It's a little far out, but the Kennett Square Annual Mushroom Festival made it on to the list. Kennett Square in Chester County calls itself the Mushroom Capital of the World, and every year the festival celebrates the many different species grown in the area. It's coming up on September 8th and 9th and you can expect mushroom samplings, eating contests, cook-offs, mushroom farm tours and loads of mushroom-y plates.

6. 50 Best New Restaurants – Bon Appétit Magazine

Two of Meal Ticket's favorite Italian joints, Vetri's Alla Spina (1410 Mt. Vernon St.) and Joey Baldino's Zeppoli (618 Collings Ave, Collingswood, NJ) made it onto this exclusive list. It's not easy to make it in this industry, but the food at these places speaks for itself. Bon App loved the big order of spaghetti vongole firmly entrenched in Sicilian tradition at Zeppoli, and the pig plates (tails and shoulder) at Alla Spina.

Did they miss anything? Let us know in the comments.
