Things we like: Coffee travel tabs

The other day, I got a latte to go from Le Pain Quotidien (801 Walnut St.). Yeah yeah, I was just there thet other weekend, but I had to make another trip to Jeweler's Row SHUT UP. When the disinterested barista set it down in front of me, a little T-shaped orange sticker covered the sippy spout. Hmm. This was the first time I'd seen such an accessory to the conventional travel coffee cup.

Though it probably doesn't mean much to anyone on foot, for those carrying their coffee in the car, these unassuming slosh barriers are the best, most important invention since the pill. Hitting a bump, a sinkhole, a squirrel ... how many times have I had cappuccino, chai or pour-over geysers suddenly erupt from the top of a take-away coffee cup? Pretty much every time I've ever driven with one of those scalding pick-me-ups. Not this time: I powered down pothole-wrecked Eighth Street like a granny down the aisles of a ShopRite Can Can sale, weaving through traffic and around buses, with nary a hot drop spilled. My cup holders are dry as new. No rogue droplets have pooled into the crevices of my gear shift.

Knowitall parade-rainer Drew Lazor informs me Ants Pants (2212 South St.) and a few other cafés around town also stamp their travel-cup blowholes with similar ingenious tabs. And I thought I was the first to discover this. Now I know what Buzz Aldrin feels like.

A little late to the party aren't you? Or do you just no go to Dunkin Donuts? They have had those sippy hole covers for years, and they are attached to the cup so you don't lose them. And I don't even drink coffee!
