West Philly is so green that sometimes we who dwell in the city's southerly wards feel a different kind of green about it. The front lawns ... the magnolia trees... the-worm composting seminars and soda fermentation workshops. That's right, those are just two of the events organized by the University City District's Sustainable Saturdays: The West Philadelphia Local Food Series. Damn you, lucky West Philly collegiate hippies.

The series launches this Saturday, and will run through the September on every third Saturday. The kickoff's theme is "Grow it Yourself," and features a daylong lineup of events. Get schooled on sustainable landscaping at the Chester Avenue Community Garden and wild foraging at the University of the Sciences Lower Mill Creek Garden, then hop the Philly Homegrown Farm-to-Table Trolley, which makes stops at the Walnut Hill Community Farm, Farm 51 and Milk & Honey Market before arriving at MidAtlantic for a $45/person family-style feast. For dessert, hit Capogiro, where the scoopers will be dipping Native Mountain Mint Gelato, churned with wild mint from nearby Bartram's Garden.
