Want to go to the StarChefs Rising Stars Gala?

POSTED: Friday, February 15, 2013, 4:23 PM

So we've got our hands on a pair of tickets to the StarChefs Rising Stars Gala on Thursday, February 21 and instead of selfishly keeping them for ourselves, we are generously offering them up to one lucky Meal Ticket reader. Ah, who are we kidding? We'll be there too.

So, what's this StarChefs thing all about you ask? Well, it's a gala which is pretty fancy to begin with, think flowing Champagne, caviar, cufflinks and clutches, as well as an awards ceremony for the talented folks who have been named Philadelphia's rising stars. That means you'll have the chance to rub elbows with the likes of Kevin Sbraga, Le Virtu's Joe Cicala, Rittenhouse Tavern's Nick Elmi and Mike Solomonov. Plus it's at the Kimmel Center which is pretty damn fancy.

So, how do you win ticket to this sure to be awesome event? All you have to do is tell us about your favorite Philly chef in the comments section. Get creative, guys, best story wins the prize. We'll get back to you with a winner on Monday.

My favorite Philadelphia chef is whomever is making the pizzas at Santucci's at 10th and Christian. Dude has fed me way more than he knows. Bless you, unknown pizza man.

Did Scott Schroeder put you up to this? He's my favorite by far, even though he won't let me follow him on Twitter.

Marc Vetri is cool. He spends this Saturday playing guitar with Phil Roy in Phoenixville coffee house, letting his staff run the business's.
Has turned a lot of good workers into good Owners and helps lots of Kids with His charitable foundation. Wish I could be soo good at what i do and not have to look like I work 100 hours a week.

Han chiang. Anyone who has us sing praises about his delicious food by ironically numbing our taste buds deserves major kudos.

Jeremy Nolen. We met many years ago at a scooter rally, as we were both into vintage scooters; he, a Vespa and I, a Lambretta. Fate would have it that we moved to Philly at the same time and the friendship continued. I've seen him go from a sous chef to making a name for himself as a successful executive chef that carved out his German-cooking niche at Brauhaus Schmitz.

    With Garces we ate Cochinillo,
    Roasted to a crisp.
Yet the heart that once was in it has left on an ego trip,
    Vetri served us gnocchi,
    Delicate brown butter mi amore.
Despite a texture of perfection, few patrons can afford.
The true chef de Philadelphia, puts the city’s soul to plate
Paesano’s and Modo Mio, a combo none can hate.
So a cheer to Peter McAndrews, a nod to Philly’s working class style,
His rabe, provolone and brisket beat all others by a mile.

My favorite Philadelphia chefs are the couple who run Nhu Y, the Bella Vista bahn mi destination. I love them for how they always smile, and how they leave town every year to go home. How my car is littered with the rubber bands that hold together the parchment around their sandwiches, and how the smell of the bread never fails to bring me back to the years where I lived at 4th and Catharine and would sit in the park covered in breadcrumbs.

My favorite Philly chef is Mike Solomonov. While i could simply mention "chicken and donuts" and leave it at that, it wouldn't tell the whole story. While throwing a dinner party for 14 people, I came across Chef Solomonov's recipe for the lamb shoulder roast that is the centerpiece of Zahav's family-style meal. In preparing the lamb, I had questions on a couple of the final steps and frantically reached out to Zahav and to my surprise, I actually received a prompt response. Needless to say, the meal was a huge success in great part because of Chef Solomonov's willingness to give back and not keep his recipes a proprietary secret. Oh, and let's not forget...chicken and donuts!
