On Jan. 16, Amis (412 S. 13th St.) will launch its version of a traditional South Philly Sunday gravy, a three-course feast (price TBD; think $30-$35) inspired by the end-of-week meals Marc Vetri grew up eating at his paternal grandmother's house â and featuring Vetri's father Sal's much-applauded meatballs (above). "Sal's mother would put out Sunday dinners for Marc and his family ... a traditional, old-school South Philly Italian meal," says Amis chef Brad Spence, who adds test runs of the gravy have gone smashingly so far. "It started at 1 and would go to 7 at night. This is a shortened version, but we're keeping it the same style." The meal will start with an antipasti spread (all sorts of veggies â carrots, fennel, cauliflower, eggplant â pickled/marinated, and tossed with pecorino cheese), then move into the serious business: a slow-cooked red gravy packed with sausage, meatballs and hard-boiled eggs (a Vetri family touch), along with bowls of rigatoni and fresh-baked garlic bread. For dessert, a simple ricotta/cinnamon cheesecake. "Soul food, you know?" says Spence. Oh, we know.

Sounds like a mouth watering event, the menu looks nothing short of spectacular. Sauces like gravy goes really well with meatballs and rigatoni.  Just a wonderful great time with a great meal.
