At long last, WineO opens in Northern Liberties

Some NoLibs residents were sore when Ministry of Information, the cheap drinks/smoker-friendly/Swanson frozen dinners-serving bar at Fourth and Poplar, shut down in the spring of 2007. But peoples' ears perked up when they heard that WineO, a wine bar and restaurant, would be taking its place. After some tough delays (it was originally slated to opened in early 2008), owner John Nolano got the thing rolling two weeks back.

Anyone who patronized the Minfo in its heyday will be surprised by the completely transformed interior — a long concrete bar, open kitchen, chalkboard menus and booth seating grant WineO a homey bistro feel, a far cry from the sticky charms of its predecessor. Wall décor ranges from a banjo and a flat-screen to a set of colonial merrymaking paintings; a paneled wood overhang atop the bar is meant to ape stacks of wine cases.

Vino is the word, of course, with a taut, well-rounded list of wines from Italy, Cali, Argentina, Australia, France — 18 by the glass and more than 40 by the bottle. But they've also applied attention to some of the more thrifty drinkers out there with nightly happy hour deals ($3 Jameson shots on Wednesday, $3 lagers on Thursday, etc.), always-available citywide specials and $3 house wines by the glass.

Check out chef Fabrizio Pace's Medi Italian Market-sourced Medi menu (he's cooked at La Veranda and Gioia Mia), sommelier Luca Cimmarotta's wine list and the hearty-for-a-wine-bar beer list below.

UPDATE [07dec08]: Added updated menu, wine list, beer list and happy hour specials; check it all out after the jump.

Looks like a nice place. But let them know they have some spelling mistakes on the wine list. IE: Caymus Conundrum, Pretty sure it is Ramey not Remey and St Urbans-Hof Qba
