"PORK ROLL IS THE UBER-FOOD. You can Grill it, fry it, nuke it, eat it raw...it all tastes great."
"So I just got back to Ohio from visiting Jersey over the holidays. I
bought out 3 stores of their Taylor Pork roll supply! I'm now
distributing it to my 3 sisters and my parents for their enjoyment."
"Is it actually a meat? Who cares, the rest of the world is missing out on the best export Jersey has to offer!!!"
"Pork roll is probably the most toxic meat there
is...but i was raised on it and I didn't turn out so bad!!!"
Just a small sampling of comments lifted directly from pork roll's Facebook fan page. (Disclosure: The fan page was created by a CP webmaster Marc Steel.) Also known as Taylor Ham, pork roll is that distinctive, tongue-pink, round-as-the-moon processed meat product that originated in Jersey, but is also ubiquitous in Philly and its surrounding counties. Somewhat comparable to Spam in terms of taste, pork roll is at its best when greasily pan-fried (see above), with any number of Pac-Man-like slits cut in it to keep it flat, and served with eggs any way.
The lifeblood of many a glinting diner and grease truck, this distant cousin of PA's scrapple is hyper-regional delicacy that's scarce in most other states. Still, it seems that area natives who have since relocated to other parts of the country have not lost a taste for it, as indicated by its nearly 3,200 fans. Become one of us today.
An aside for Philly/Jersey natives who have moved away and miss pork roll — you can order it online at jerseyporkroll.com.
One cannot buy pork roll outside this area? Jesus, I could never move. Stuff is soooo good.
Colin: Seriously. I just don't know if the rest of the country would "get" pork roll like we do. Haha.
Is it always so Pacmanesque?
I don't know man; didn't ever get on the pork roll bandwagon. However I never noticed the pac-man like similarity -- maybe that will be the difference maker for me.
Clint: When I cook pork roll I usually make four small slits, one for each side, to keep it from bubbling up in the pan too much. The Pac-Man look above is a little more dramatic and awesome. Sam Fran: GET ON THE BANDWAGON.
I've recently moved to Mid-west Florida from SJ and I am happy to report that pork roll is as readily available down here as it is up in the Philly area. In fact, I just purchased some pork roll and I think I'm going to cook some up. Thanks for the inspiration.
