Mad options.

The originator of the cheesesteak got a shout-out on AMC's Sunday episode of Mad Men. Betty Draper's parents drive up to New York City from her childhood home on the Main Line to visit, and Dad enters the scene holding up a large paper bag.

"We went to Pats Steaks," says Dad, who later adds that they got a "half" for one of the kids and a chicken parmesan. Pat's Steaks owner Frank Olivieri, Jr. confirmed to Dan Gross of the Daily News that Pat's did indeed sell half-steaks, but the chicken parm was a bit of poetic license.

I wonder what cheese Dad Draper Betty's dad chose for his family's sammies. With the show set in 1963, he would have had the full range of choices: Cheez Whiz debuted in 1953.

Thanks for writing about this! I was so excited, when I saw that scene on Sunday night.

Only one correction.. in the last paragraph you say "Dad Draper" but in fact this was Betty's dad who's name is Gene Hofstadt.
