Chhaya Cafe opening on East Passyunk
Chhaya Café is the name of the biz taking over what was Le Petite Croissant at 1823 E. Passyunk Avenue. During the week, they'll operate as a coffee house, serving sandwiches, salads, fresh-baked bready fare and some unique waffle preparations — spicy cornbread, a pulled pork-topped option and black-and-white marble cake waffles are just three examples. On weekends, owner Brett Shangold says they'll serve Saturday and Sunday brunch, working off a menu that'll feature their waffles in addition to other brunch dishes. Friday and Saturday nights, they'll do cichetti for dinner — that's the Venetian small-plate service we first caught wind of this past winter thanks to Andrea Luca Rossi of Rittenhouse's Cichetteria 19. No solid opening date just yet but we'll update here as we learn more. UPDATE [13july10]: Chhaya hopes to open its doors in the first week of August, according to Shangold.
