Any excuse to use this photo.
Of all the children in the Jose Garces' portfolio, Chifa is the one I always seem to forget about, like Pod in the SRO or Judy on Family Matters. But a recent feast of fiery Thai beef salad, outstanding octo and fried shrimp with candied kumquats has put the kitchen (under the direction of chef Natalie Maronski) back on my radar. Next Thursday, Dec. 16, Chifa is doing a beer dinner with Troegs, a flyer for which I found tucked into our check presenter as neatly as a handkerchief in Duck Phillips' breast pocket. The price per head is $65 (with pairings) for four courses that include a duck (Duck!) breast with sour cherries Mad Elf jus. Tis the season. (Ed: In case you're wondering where that horribly Photoshopped image came from: See this post.)

FIRST

Hiramasa Tiradito

fennel leche de tigre, celeriac, coriander, toasted almonds, blood orange espuma

pairing: Dreamweaver

SECOND

Short Ribs

braised in Troegenator, spicy water chestnut wontons, beef broth, pickled enoki mushrooms

pairing: Troegenator

THIRD

Duck Breast

smoked parsnip puree, sauteed bok choy, sour cherries, Mad Elf duck jus

paiting: Mad Elf

DESSERT

Marble Coffee Cake

toasted hazelnuts, roasted butternut squash anglais, java syrup

pairing: Java Stout

Tasty treats
