Del Frisco's to detractors: Can't nobody hold us down

This morning, Meal Ticket was fed an unconfirmed rumor that Del Frisco's (111 S. 15th St., 215-246-0533) would be closing, so we left a message with GM Shang Skipper in the hopes of gaining more insight. Skipper called us back promptly but not before "laughing for about five minutes."

"That could not be further from the truth," said Skipper, who stressed what a serious investment the multi-restaurant chain has made in its eight-month-old Center City steak house. "We're not going anywhere." Then, without naming any names, Skipper touched on his and his team's belief that such rumors originate with other area restaurateurs.

Debunking baseless claims is part of our job and we know this is a non-story and not really worthy of a "Food News" tag. It does, however, raise an interesting question, so we'll pose it: Say the erroneous rumor of Del Frisco's closure does indeed originate with another restaurant. What, exactly, does that restaurant have to gain by putting it out there? Do they think that diners who catch the damaging talk will avoid Del Frisco's and head for their spots instead? Or is it more trite than that simply doing a competitor dirty just because it requires little effort?

What do you think?

I don't think this rumor is the work of other restaurateurs, more like whisper down the lane. I'm sure one person mentioned they couldn't go to Del Frisco's because it was closed for the night. Then the story was retold but the fact that they were closed for the evening was left off. Next thing you know people are saying Del Frisco's isn't open consistently and will be closing soon. Just a case of idle gossip and misinformation.

Aren't they in a dispute with a union? I'm not familiar with their dispute, but could THEY have started the rumor, in order to make sure that the only publicity the restaurant gets is negative?

I don't know but there was a rumor going around that Union Trust was closing.

and I feel like I heard this elsewhere, too.

Maybe this is a corruption of that rumor, or this was started in retaliation for that one. Who knows.
