Last night, Team Meal Ticket popped by Stephen Starr's El Rey (2013 Chestnut St.), which, along with the companion speakeasy Ranstead Room, is now officially open to the public. Designer Shawn Hausman has tricked out the former Midtown IV with vibrant vinyl booth covers, wild wallpapers, oft-racy prison art and a mish-mash of flea-market-find light fixtures. Dionicio Jimenez (formerly of Xochitl) is cooking up pretty traditional menu of home-style specialties — this ain't El Vez. He's doing griddled fare (chalupas, quesadillas, sopes, shrimp empanadas), ceviches, tortas/cemitas, five kinds of tacos, enchiladas, and specialties like chiles en nogada and several scratch-made moles. We dug house-made tortillas into his chorizo queso fundido, and caught a couple margaritas, including a tamarind variety flavored with a paste they render in-house. UPDATE: Here are El Rey's lunch, dinner and drink menus (PDFs). Brunch menu, via SRO's Twitter, after the jump (click to enlarge).
