Fork & Barrel moving into Center City

Matt Scheller of East Falls' Fork & Barrel (4213 Ridge Ave.) confirms a Meal Ticket tipster's report that he and partners Matt and Colleen Swartz are taking over Joe Pesce at 1113 Walnut for an as-yet-undefined — but assuredly beer drinker-friendly — concept in Center City. As we understand it, it won't be classified as a gastropub, but as another drinking-centric concept altogether. More details on this soon, but we'll be focusing on the crew's efforts up Ridge Avenue even sooner: Check out the Jan. 13 issue of CP to read Adam Erace's official review of the Euro-inspired beer bar and restaurant. UPDATE [05jan11]: Just this morning, Scheller and his partners floated a rad concept past us for the menu at this still-unnamed project. "We've been discussing deconstructing beers and spirits, then creating a menu of dishes based on their ingredients,” says Scheller. Ideas included a St. Germain-inspired salad sprinkled with elderflowers, and something with hyssop and wormwood to evoke the anisey flavor of absinthe. The food is just a notion for now, but Scheller says we definitely can count on a great beers and a “pretty intense cocktail program” for the 150-seat, four-room space. It's a "couple months" out. —Adam Erace
