- David Snyder pays a few visits to Akoya, the reimagined Asian pub inside Chestnut Street club Pearl (Akoya means pearl in Japanese). Thanks to chef Greg Garbacz's navigable menu, D finds plenty to love in this club, including the torch tuna tataki (above), a definite standout dish.

- Trey Popp satisfies a craving for chicken and waffles at Merl's Breakfast Spot, a cozy neighborhood joint at 16th and Dickinson in Newbold. But it's about more than just tasty, soulful cooking. "Merl's making more than good chicken and waffles," he writes. "She's making a better neighborhood."

- Lauren Fleming is your go-to girl for food events and deals in this week's What's Cooking, she tells you about lunch at Chifa, where to get free La Colombe coffee, a new chef and menu deal at a South Philly institution and more.

- In Feeding Frenzy, I shovel out details on Q Barbecue, Kibitz Room and an accountant-friendly deal at Morton's.
