Kibitz in the City to become Delicatessen

When Kibitz in the City closed this fall, we knew it wouldn't be long till this sweet bit of real estate (703 Chestnut St.) got a new tenant. So here's early word on Delicatessen, from Michael Spector, an Elkins Park native and industry vet who was last the manager of North Bowl. The official title for the 40-seat concept is a "Modern Jewish Deli," with twists on the typical bagel/bialy/pastrami tradition: egg dishes, smoked fish platters ("Sephardic ceviche," anyone?) and sandwiches both traditional and "new school" (the "Oy Ve(Yeee) Haaaaa" is BBQ pastrami, slaw and BBQ Russian dressing on rye; the "Busted Belt Buckle" is brisket, chunky tomato sauce, onions and provolone on a long roll).

Here's a sample menu (in PDF).

The spot, which should open sometime in the week of Feb. 21, will do breakfast, brunch and lunch daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with dinner coming in the spring.

Modern Jewish deli? That's an oxymoron. I cannot find an authentic bagel in center city! The nova is horrendous. The Jewish rye isn't. Latkes? Mine are better. Drew, come to my home and I will make you latkes.

Canter's Deli reigns supreme as the quintessential late night staple in Los Angeles since 1931. When sun and fun go to bed, Canter's begins to kick out the jams!

[...] Michael Spector’s Delicatessen, in what was Kibitz in the City, has been in soft-open mode for about a week now. Meal Ticket popped by the spot (703 Chestnut St.) earlier this week for a quick nosh. The space, which had two floors in public operation at Kibitz, is now worked down to one, with various cosmetic tweaks, including a cool old-school bathing-beauty print. (The second floor will be available for events.) They’re still working on filling up the deli cases with smoked fish, salads, meats and other treats; Spector says these selections will be a mixture of traditional deli-case fare and stuff off their more modern menu, which you can check out here. If “Modern Jewish Deli” means bacon on the menu - then I'll take an "old-fashioned Jewish Deli"...

The pastrami and kugel ROCK!!! Reminds me of Sat lunches with my grandmother after the children's concert at the Academy of Music. So great!
