Marabella Meatball Co. officially opens tomorrow, Dec. 9, but we poked our heads in to a dry run yesterday evening. (We first mentioned it here in October.) Right at the corner of 12th and Walnut, it's a modern, nicely appointed space well-equipped for both sit-down and takeout business. The shop's the latest venture for the Marabella clan, which has operated a number of casual Italian concepts in the Philly region over the years. (Spearheading this location is chef Gabe Marabella, along with his son, also named Gabe.) They're doing four varieties of meatball here — beef, pork, chicken and vegetarian (bean-based) — and they're not blending up their meat (e.g. a beef/veal/pork mix for a traditional Sunday gravy addition), as many ball rollers do. You can build your own sauced/topping-ed sandwich — either on a hoagie roll, a round bun or sliders, all coming from Liscio's — or go with one of their options. We went the slider route, scarfing one of each meaty option — all quite tasty, but loved the old-school beef ball in particular. UPDATE: Here's the official menu (PDF).
