Cookie Confidential (517 S. Fifth St.), Melissa Torre's online baking company, has come to life just off South Street. Her new shop opened on Black Friday, and as soon as we got the cheesesteak cookie word, we had to drop in. First things first: The cheesesteak cookies are certainly a surprise. It's a savory cookie — almost cousin to the corn muffin, only more fun and way more Philly-centric — and it's all about the hunks of dehydrated beef and onion and the lingering hints of pepper. Even if the idea freaks you out, you've gotta give Torre some points for originality. You've also gotta be wondering: Why?! It started with the bacon cookie. Torre, a bacon devotee (her and her boyfriend have matching bacon lightning bolt tattoos), could never find the types of meaty baked goods she wanted, so she made her own. Now, though, she feels bacon is passé, overdone. (She still offers her signature bacon peanut brittle.) "I had to one-up everyone," Torre says. And the cheesesteak cookie was born. But she's no one-trick pony. Torre's got a chipotle chocolate chip pecan cookie, an apple chai cookie and a new line of cupcakes in mason jars. Her latest release is a gingersnap made with Art in the Age's SNAP liquor. Plenty of vegan-friendly choices, too, and she's happy to customize anything in the store to your liking.

Torre wants her new place to be all about the sweets — she's insistent that this isn't another coffee shop. Still, she's offering One Village Coffee and Franklin Fountain ice cream, and she hopes to bring in tea from the local Cardamom & Curry. Torre's got plenty of other plans, too: soy ice cream, sugar-free cookies, longer hours when it gets warmer. The biggest plan of them all? She'd like to turn Cookie Confidential into her full-time job. A longtime bartender at Tattooed Mom and Sugar Mom's, Torre says she isn't a big drinker. But she's got a huge sweet tooth. "I enjoy this much more than getting people drunk," she laughs.
