Newcomer King Kabob (38th and Spruce streets) has just joined the ranks of the food trucks trolling around West Philly. The little silver cart is grilling up skewers of sirloin steak, grilled vegetables and marinated chicken, in sweet sauces like ginger-soy teriyaki and tangy Caribbean. The initial menu has a dozen options ranging from $3 to $5.

I tried the classic King Chicken Kabob, their most popular option so far. Juicy hunks of chicken breast come skewered with peppers and onion, all slathered in a tangy barbecue sauce. (It's a good thing they give you a fork to eat it with, because all that sauce would mean disaster for my clothes.) Also worth checking out: the steak and salsa kabob, with peppers and onions in a lemon pepper salsa, and the Cajun-seasoned chicken and pineapple stick.

Vegetarian options are a bit slim, though the Veggie Lovers' kabob is packed with goodness: peppers, squash, zucchini, potatoes, mushrooms and Parmesan cheese in a red wine dressing, all for $3. If you're craving dessert, the honey- and lemon-glazed fruit kabobs ($3) are different in a good way. I liked the grilled peaches glazed with butter rum, sprinkled with cinnamon and fresh coconut.

Co-owners Diana Colon and Victor Vans say they have big plans in the works, including adding locations at Center City and JFK Boulevard, possibly as early as this week. We'll let you know once that happens, but for now, you can catch King Kabob from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
