Pastrami-scarfing finals (featuring a CP competitor!) at Delicatessen tonight

Last Monday we told you about the eating contest, to celebrate National Pastrami Day (Jan. 13), at Delicatessen (703 Chestnut St.). Today at 5:30 p.m., the top six fastest eaters who have qualified over the past week will face off in the scarf-off finals. The challenge: a 48-ounce (aka 3-pound) pastrami sandwich known as The Maccabee. Delicatessen owner Michael Spector plans on doling out gratis pastrami and beer for curious onlookers. Now, please indulge us as we rootrootroot for the home team — John Tarng, City Paper's systems administrator, is one of the six competitors vying for the pastrami crown. That's the characteristically nonchalant Tarng above (we asked him to show us his "game face," and that's what he offered up). FYI to other competitors: This dude ate a wrap and fries for lunch today like it wasn't no thang, meaning he IS NOT SCARED. GO JOHN!
