Filed Under: Booze | Food News | Openings

Michael Pasquarello, who owns Café Lift with wife Jeniphur Whitleigh, just confirmed that Prohibition Taproom, their pub/kitchen in the space that was briefly Maker's Local and Canavan's (501 N. 13th St.), will open to the public this Sat., Nov. 1.

The 50-seater will feature 10 nine beers on tap and a chalkboard menu with a big emphasis on local ingredients. We'll have more details soon; in the meantime, check out our previous coverage here and here.

We've been excited over this for months. Having another bar makes for a destination area and helps to keep people in the neighborhood. With Root PTR and my place along with Sazon and Siam Lotus this is fast becoming a destination area for food and drink.

Heather, what name for this neighborhood is sticking so far? It's Spring Garden for sure but the PR girls come up with things that are ever so much more fun.

Ahh, what neighborhood is it. We're north on spring garden by 1 block and get painted with the "North Philadelphia" brush. Go one block south on spring garden and its referred to as the "Lofts district" It makes a huge difference though. Say "north philly" and people assume negative things about an area. Someone said "eraserhead" and at one point it was called "the tenderline" Tomato--Ta-mah-to, Potato, Po-tah-to! Its the Spring Garden Section. At least the 100 year old map of philly I have says so. But this is Philly and people get wierd about their neighborhoods and PR people make things up. My hope is that PTR's opening will draw skeptics to the area. My place opening wasn't enough alone to get people to the area. With 2 places though it becomes more of a destination point. Its very good for the area. And good for both places.

Thanks for your feedback, Heather. I'll probably always call it Spring Garden, but I like to keep abreast of what the kids are saying. Hopefully with all of the neighborhoods proximal to Center City experiencing increases in fortune, North Philly will cease to be a dirty word.
