House wine is a bad deal. Paying six bucks for a glass out of a bottle that cost $9 is not only a crappy value, the juice generally sucks. Convinced that casual and affordable doesn't have equal drinking cheap, hangover-inducing plonk, Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) owner Dan Clark, general manager Ed Hackett and executive chef Jonathan McDonald got to work on getting an affordable house wine made specifically for P&K.
Oregon's A to Z Wineworks was enlisted to create a red and a white table wine that compliments McDonald's modern pub fare without molesting your wallet. Glasses go for $9, half-carafes $26, bottles for $40; available exclusively at Pub & Kitchen.
Check out their descriptions:
2007 White Wine: A bright, intense 2007 Chardonnay vinted from Dijon clones of the grape grown exclusively in Oregons renowned Willamette Valley. Aged in stainless to attain classic Oregon steely Chardonnay character, the wine is complex and well-balanced between acid and richness, with a long, clean finish with lingering mineral and citrus notes.
2006 Red Wine: A soft, subtle 2006 Merlot blend featuring Cabernet Sauvignon for richness and Syrah for depth. Crafted from grapes from across the state, this wine was born in what Robert Parker called an exceptional year for Oregon grapes.
I'm sure this wine is good, but it's dubious to suggest that paying $6 for a glass of $9 wine is a ripoff but somehow paying $9 for a glass of $15 dollar wine is not (http://www.atozwineworks.com/chard.html). The wine is still marked up 166% doesn't necessarily make it a stupendous deal.
They NEVER show boxing matches on the TVs. P&K = Peaceniks & Kill the goose that lays the golden egg.
Leo you must work for the PLCB, the chances of getting that wine in a state store in PA for $15 is pretty much impossible.
Not usually one to defend the PLCB, but for a while recently they did have an A to Z '05 blend of a similar makeup for $12 a bottle.
