Score one for the awkward carrot!

Up until this week, being a unique piece of produce across the Atlantic wasn't such a good idea. But this Wednesday, the European Union saw the light and lifted a ban on the sale of strangely shaped and sized fruits and veggies. Kind of love this quote in the Times:

"This marks a new dawn for the curvy cucumber and the knobbly carrot," said Mariann Fischer Boel, European commissioner for agriculture, who argued that regulations were better left to market operators.

“"t makes no sense to throw perfectly good products away, just because they are the 'wrong' shape," Ms. Fischer Boel said.

You tell 'em, Mariann! Just because a plum is oval-ish doesn't mean it isn't delicious. And what's so wrong about being a big carrot? This is a good day indeed for all those young carrots who are a little on the taller side. Like my mom said, it's what's on the inside that counts. Or maybe it was, "Someday the boys will be taller and maybe you can wear heels. But for now, part your hair and wear flats." Either way.

Not all were so lucky, though. Apples, citrus, peaches, pears, strawberries and tomatoes still have to conform or get off the shelf. Note to European grocers: Send those rejects over to Headhouse and call them "heirloom." Society Hill will eat that up.
