Watch your back, Sabrina's: South Philly just got another killer brunch menu. The Pub on Passyunk East, better known as the P.O.P.E., has hired "kitchen genius" Pete Miller to overhaul their entire food program.

Miller has previously cooked at Fergie's Pub and Southwark, but has recently been using his raconteur and coffee skills pulling the shots at Benna's Caf, owned by his wife, Nancy Trachtenberg. His dinner menu for the P.O.P.E. is "still in the works," but will certainly include vegan and vegetarian entres as well as thoughtful bar fare.

First to debut will be the brunch menu this weekend, Saturday March 28 and Sunday March 29. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can drown your hangover in Miller's vegan french toast made with coconut milk and almonds, a breakfast burger with cheddar, bacon and an over-easy egg, toad-in-the-hole, and hamsteak with grits and red-eye gravy, among other choices.

The consulting chef grew up in rural Illinois, where mentioned he "had many breakfasts at truck stops. When I turned 19 and got more into real Illinois, we went for after-work drunk breakfasts at the 67. The 67 actually rated their truck stops, and the one in Bloomington, that was a four-star truck stop." He pauses, then adds, "home of the chicken-fried steak, you know. Bottle of beer under the table. I dated a 67 waitress, too. That's a country song right there."

YAY, they have really good Bloody Mary's and I'm excited for them to have a worthwhile brunch. Fuck yeah!

I have my fingers crossed this works out. I loved going to POPE and the last two trips were disappointing. They got rid of their pizza oven (and some menu favorites because of that) and the presence of roaches crawling over the couches was just too much.
