The Corner (102 S. 13th St.), a resto redo of cocktail bar APO, previewed yesterday evening in support of its opening night (tonight!). We dropped in for a peek at the new space, worked over by owners Tony Rim and Drew Milstein, and the menu, from chef Scott Swiderski (formerly of Buddakan) and his sous John Taus (last of Snackbar). APO's ample ground-floor drinking space has been converted into banquette and open booth seating, while the long bar toward the rear of the space now serves as a narrow-but-bustling open kitchen with a bit of stool seating. (It's fun to watch the kitchen guys sending plates from the far end of the kitchen to the pass up front; all the timing and finesse of a relay race, without any of that pesky sprinting.) Swiderski's comfort food-ish menu is tight, with small sections of starters (peep the ridiculously good "shrimp in a blanket," head-on prawns wrapped in noodle-like fried kataifi), salads, entrées (burgers, sandwiches ... the apple cider-brined, batter-less fried chicken was ill) and veggie sides. On the drinking end of spectrum, they're offering some classics (a nice Sazerac) as well as some house originals (the whimsically named "Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame" combines reposado, super-smoky mezcal, green apple, lime, cayenne pepper and bitters).
